A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that is medically referred to as an abdominoplasty. As the name implies, a tummy tuck's goal is to remove excess fat and skin around the abdomen. At the same time, the procedure tightens the abdominal muscles and leaves the patient with a flatter stomach. Because a tummy tuck is a full-scale operation and patients vary, consult your doctor about post-operation exercise. Avoid any form of heavy exercise for at least the first two weeks after your tummy tuck operation.
Step 1
Stand up and sit down on your own, even during the first week after the operation. Though this task may not seem like exercise, it may be quite strenuous on your body. Try to stand as tall as possible without the help of others.
Step 2
Walk around as much as you're physically able. Even if you're walking around slowly, doing so prevents blood clots from forming in your legs. This exercise is especially important immediately after your tummy tuck surgery.
Step 3
Gradually begin light exercise after at least two weeks have passed since your surgery. Stick to low-impact workouts like brisk walking, the elliptical, cycling and light calisthenics. Initially avoid exercises that strain the abdominal muscles, including sit-ups, crunches and weight lifting.
Step 4
Resume your normal workout routine after you've received an OK from your doctor. This may take as little as a few months or as long as a year.
