You may think of cod liver oil as a foul-tasting, "good for you" supplement forced on you by your mother when you were a child. In recent years, however, cod liver oil has become modernized, both in its preparation and its uses. According to UC Berkeley Wellness Guide, cod liver oil is now emphasized more for adult use, primarily to relieve arthritis pain and prevent other health conditions. Moreover, while cod liver oil is still available in oil form, it can also be taken as a capsule. If you suffer from arthritis or other health problems, discuss cod liver oil supplementation with your doctor.

Anti-Inflammatory Benefits

According to Dr. Ben Kim.com, cod liver oil is a potent source of the Omega-3 fatty acid eicosopentanoic acid, also known as EPA, which is thought to provide multiple health benefits. EPA is thought to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, which may make it useful in relieving arthritis pain. UC Berkeley Wellness Guide adds that some people also take cod liver oil for rheumatoid arthritis, which is thought to benefit from EPA as well. UC Berkeley Wellness Guide cautions that while there has been some evidence that fish oil may improve arthritis pain, its high levels of vitamin A may cause bone weakness.

Mood and Nervous System Benefits

According to UC Berkeley Wellness Guide, cod liver oil is thought to provide some relief from depression, although no conclusive research has substantiated this claim. Dr. Ben Kim.com says the potential benefits of cod liver oil for mood are related to the fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid, also known as DHA, which is present in high concentrations in cod liver oil. DHA is thought to support the nervous system and prevent depression. If you are struggling with depression, you should discuss this with your doctor.

Disease Prevention

Cod liver oil is considered to be a preventative measure against heart attacks, stroke, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. According to UC Berkeley Wellness Guide, however, these benefits have not been backed by solid scientific research. Dr. Ben Kim.com reports that because cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D, it may support your immune system and prevent autoimmune diseases. In addition, Dr. Ben Kim.com notes that vitamin D is considered a powerful combatant to cancer, and may also stabilize blood sugar, prevent Type 2 diabetes, and lower blood pressure. If you're at risk for or suffer from these conditions, discuss cod liver oil supplements with your doctor.
