Changing your name after your marriage is a personal choice. Although some women choose to keep their family names after the wedding, most women follow the traditional route and take their husband's last name. The first things you should change are your Social Security card and your driver's license. These are important documents that will make it easier for you to change your name in other places.

What You Need

Before you can change your name anywhere, you need proof of your marriage. You must present a certified marriage license with a raised seal, according to The Knot. Marriage licenses are usually sent to you automatically. If you do not receive one, contact the office where your license was filed. Your marriage license is an official legal document that proves your name has changed. You will also need your driver's license and Social Security card in your previous name to prove your identity.

Social Security Office

The Social Security Administration requires you to complete an Application for a Social Security Card, also known as Form SS-5. You must bring the following documents to your local Social Security office in person: the completed Form SS-5, proof of your identity such as a driver's license or passport, and proof of your name change. There is no charge to get a new Social Security card in your new married name. If anyone tries to sell you a new Social Security card, it is a scam and should be reported to the authorities, according to The Knot. Your Social Security number will remain the same.

Driver's License

You must also change your name in person with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Fees vary by state, so check with your local branch to find out what forms of payment are accepted and how much your name change will cost. You should bring your driver's license with your previous name, your marriage certificate and your new Social Security card, according to the Unofficial DMV Guide. You can also change your vehicle title and registration at the same time. Additional fees may apply. Some states, such as Ohio, will not change a name on a title.

Other Places to Consider

Changing your name with other organizations ranges from a simple phone call to sending in copies of your marriage license and new driver's license and Social Security card. You must check with each organization for its individual requirements. Some places to consider include banks, the post office, utility companies, alumni groups, voter registration, credit cards, insurance policies, magazine subscriptions, and mortgages or leases, according to The Knot. You will also need to change your name with your employer and on other legal documents, such as your will.

Warning

Do not change your name on your passport before your wedding if you are planning to leave the country on a honeymoon immediately afterward. The name on your passport must match the name on your tickets and any other travel documents. It is much easier to travel under your maiden name and change your passport later.
