Archery consistently ranks as one of the safest sports -- on par with bowling, ping pong and badminton -- because rather than having the objective of fast, high-impact movement, the sport instead focuses on careful aim and quiet stances. There are several archery ranges within about 35 minutes of Kansas City, Missouri, where you can practice your aim and shoot for perfection.
Hit the Bull's Eye
Take aim at 3D whitetail deer targets and paper bull’s eyes at Parma Woods Shooting Range in Parkville, Missouri, about 15 minutes northwest of Kansas City. The static range places targets at distances of 10, 20, 30 and 40 yards, allowing a challenge for all skill levels. A small fee is charged to access the archery range, and paper targets and archery butts are included in admission. The range is open Friday through Tuesday, and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
KC Performance Archery & Range in Olathe, Kansas, about 25 minutes southwest of Kansas City, has an indoor range where you can test your skills on 3D animals, such as cheetahs and turkeys, as well as paper targets. Pay a small fee for a one-hour session shooting at either type of target, or purchase a 10-hour punch card, which gives you access to both types of target. Half-hour lessons are available for individuals, while half- and one-hour sessions are offered for groups. Bow and arrow rentals are available on-site, and the shop offers services including set up of bows, installation of basic accessories and arrow refletching.
Chase the Sun
Situated on 2,366 acres of bottomland, upland timber, agricultural land and pastures, Platte Falls Conservation Area is roughly 25 minutes north of Kansas City. The area features an archery sight-in range where you can adjust your bow before taking aim at five targets on the static archery range. The range is free to the public, and concrete paths leading to the range are handicap accessible. The range is open daily from a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset.
Hone Your Skills
