A crossover in basketball refers to a common dribbling technique. Dribbling consists of the basketball player bouncing the ball while traveling down the court. The crossover is a technique that allows the player to change the direction of the ball. The player switches the dribbling hand in an attempt to confuse the defending player. A properly executed crossover can allow the dribbling player to successfully maneuver around the defending player. A more advanced crossover dribble involves the ball going through the legs of the player before changing hands.

Step 1

Hold the basketball between your hands and step out onto the basketball court. Release the ball to allow it to drop onto the hard wooden playing surface. Extend your dominant hand forward. Push down on the top of the basketball as it bounces up off the court to dribble the ball.

Step 2

Continue to dribble until you have adequate control of the ball. Rotate your dominant hand slightly as the ball bounces off of the court. Push down on the top of the ball at a slight angle to bounce the ball in front of you toward your opposing hand. Extend your opposite hand as the ball bounces off the court.

Step 3

Dribble the ball with your opposing hand to complete the fundamental crossover dribble. Practice these simple techniques to master switching the ball from one hand to the other. Push down on the top of the ball to dribble with your dominant hand. Take a step forward with the opposite foot to your dribbling hand.

Step 4

Push down on the outside edge of the basketball to aim the ball toward the open space between your outstretched legs. Extend your opposite hand to the side as the ball bounces once between your legs. Rotate your opposite hand to compensate for the angled bounce of the ball.

Step 5

Place your opposite hand over the top of the ball as it bounces off the wooden basketball court. Push down on the ball to complete the between-the-legs crossover dribble. Practice these dribbling techniques to master the more advanced crossover dribble.
