English as a Second Language (ESL) students study in Seattle at Seattle Pacific University, the University of Washington, St. Jame's Cathedral, and the Washington Academy of Languages. The various locations and schools have online resources to assist with locating tutors. Not all programs are tuition based. Find additional school resources for learning English in the Seattle Public Library systems.
University of Washington
The English department at University of Washington provides instructions for non-native speakers, as well as a Master of Teaching program to teach English to speakers of other languages. The English 105 course for international teaching assistants is designed for graduate students teaching at the University of Washington. Scores on the Versant English test determine eligibility for this course that is offered each quarter. These programs are primarily for adults working in academia.
Seattle Pacific University
Seattle Pacific University is another area university that has ESL programs. The goal of their A.C.E. program is to provide skills for effective communication in academia and the workplace. The A.C.E. program graduates enter Seattle University without TOEFL scores. Students may be placed with a host family or offered dorm accommodations. These programs have small classes with 20 hours of language classes per week.
St. James Cathedral
Adult refugees or immigrants living in the United States permanently are eligible for free ESL classes at St. James Cathedral. The archdiocese of Seattle supports all people regardless of citizenship status in learning English. The St. James ESL project began in 1975 with a single tutor and student. It has since grown to 37 countries. English classes are supported by church teachings and volunteer tutoring resources.
Washington Academy of Languages
The intensive language program at Washington Academy of Languages provides classes in elementary, intermediate, advanced communications, and college preparation. The courses are five and ten weeks in duration. Language classes at this school are particularly suited towards foreign students with an I-20 visa. Tuition for these programs ranges from approximately $1,300 to $2,500. Housing, medical insurance, and other program fees may also apply.
Resources
Online resources are available for any person in requiring English language skill study. Quizzes in multiple language formats are available at Activities for ESL Students(see Resource 2). ESL students are allowed to access the Internet in all Seattle Public Libraries. There are online dictionary and grammar tools at the Longman English dictionary website to assist with writing contemporary English. Young ESL students begin their self-study with the Purdue Owl WL writing lab website (see Resource 4). Here, students are able to research both grammar and mechanics exercises, as well as writing activities.
