Summer Recreation Camp Programs in Montgomery County, Maryland

When school is out, children want to leave the homework behind and spend their days carefree and active. In Montgomery County, Maryland, sign your child up for one of the many recreational summer camp programs that are available through the county's Parks and Recreation department. Most of these camps are offered by week-long sessions.

Times

For children ages three to 18, the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation department offers a variety of recreational camp options. As of September 2010, these camps run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Extended day programs are offered in the morning and afternoons. Morning programs run from 7 to 9 a.m., and afternoon programs run from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Types of Camps

There are a variety of summer camp options available for children. These camps include sports, magic, horseback riding, dance, nature, science, acting and swimming. In addition to these specific camps, there are camps that provide children with a traditional summer camp experience where numerous activities are combined into their daily schedule.

Transportation

To help ease the stress of driving children to camp, Montgomery County offers free bus transportation from central locations throughout the county to these summer camps. Additionally, all the camps have one central pick up and drop off location, so parents who have multiple children attending separate camps at different locations will only have to pick up or drop off their children at one spot.

Preschool Children

If you have a preschool age child that you are concerned about how he will adjust to camp, then consider the half-day option. The county offers the Little People Center programs where children play games, do arts and crafts and participate in sing-alongs. These programs are designed to build a child's social skills while encouraging creativity. The Little People Center programs are held at seven community centers and elementary schools across Montgomery County.

Cost

The summer camps in Montgomery County are designed to be affordable and available to children of nearly any budget. If individuals cannot pay the full tuition upfront, the county allows for tuition to be paid on a payment plan. Additionally, there is financial assistance available for qualifying children. As of September 2010, camps ranged in price from $150 to $625 per week.
