Blackheads are formed when the skin produces too much natural oil. The natural oil, or sebum, combines with dry, dead skin cells and blocks the hair follicles, resulting in clogged pores and blackheads, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Although blackheads are a nuisance and are most common in teens, the problem usually clears up by age 30. In the meantime, a homemade can dry up oily skin and help to clear unsightly blackheads. See your physician if your blackheads worsen, or if they become painful or inflamed.

Step 1

Remove the peel from 1 large, ripe tomato. Discard the peel and place the tomato in a blender or food processor container.

Step 2

Add 1 tsp. lemon or lime juice and 1 tsp. uncooked instant oatmeal. Blend thoroughly.

Step 3

Wash your face with your favorite facial cleanser. Pat your skin dry with a towel.

Step 4

Massage the tomato and citrus mask into your face. Pay extra attention to oily or blackhead-affected areas such as your forehead, nose and chin.

Step 5

Allow the tomato to remain on your face for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your face with warm water followed by a splash of cool water to close your pores. Pat your skin dry, then apply an oil-free moisturizer.

Tips and Warnings

  • Fresh lemon or lime juice applied directly to blackheads two to three times daily can dry oil, tighten the pores, and help to prevent blackheads.
