The ultimate goal of a detox diet is to cleanse the body of impurities and provide you with a fresh start. These diets usually entail limiting the body to liquids or a very strict food regimen. Some believe that by doing this, the body flushes out built-up toxins which promotes good health. Some popular detox diets may also help the dieter lose weight quickly. Before beginning a detox diet, consult your doctor about the effects it may have on your body.
Master Cleanse
The Master Cleanse is arguably one of the most popular detox diets, as of 2010. The diet consists of drinking a combination of maple syrup and lemonade and is sometimes referred to as the "lemonade diet." Its intention is to help you cleanse the digestive and kidney system, purify glands and cells and eliminate waste built up in joints and muscles. You may experience temporary weight loss during the cleanse, but will likely gain back at least half of it once resuming a normal diet.
Raw Food Diet
As the name of this detox diet implies, those following the raw food diet must only consume raw foods. This vegan diet is based on the idea that once food is cooked, valuable nutrients that help the body naturally detoxify are removed. To successfully complete these detox diet, dieters must eat only raw fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. Water, raw fruit juice and coconut milk is also allowed. The raw food diet bans all meat and dairy consumption, as well.
Liver Cleansing Diet
Created by Australian Physician Laura Cabot, the Liver Cleansing Diet's ultimate goal is to rid the liver of built-up waste and toxins. It bans all dairy products, but allows the dieter to eat vegetables, fruits, poultry, fish and water. This diet provides the body with protein in addition to other vitamins and nutrients.
Hollywood 48-Hour Detox
The Hollywood 48-Hour detox diet, sometimes referred to as a "miracle diet," claims that the dieter may lose up to 10 pounds in two days. It's a pre-made bottled product that consists of various fruits, fruit juices, antioxidants and essential oils, says Marya Wegneka of Vanderbilt University. The product also claims to cleanse the digestive system throughout the detox process.
