Keeping up with a cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing routine is essential for warding off skin flaking and an otherwise dull-looking skin tone. By using creamy exfoliators and rich moisturizers that contain antioxidants, you can help your skin look smooth while you prevent damage from environmental factors and UV rays.

Step 1

Banish drab skin by washing your face and body once or twice a day with a moisturizing cleanser. "More" magazine recommends using a soap that contains nourishing ingredients like shea butter or hazelnut oil. Wet your face and body and smooth the soap over your skin, then rinse it all away to avoid any dulling build-up or residue.

Step 2

Slough off dead skin cells twice a week by applying an exfoliating scrub. "Cosmopolitan" suggests making your own by combining 1 cup of sea salt, 2 ounces of olive oil, 1 juiced lime and 3/4 ounces of white tequila. Derek Hofmann, the spa director of the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, states that lime and tequila will rid your skin of toxins and give it a more uniform tone and texture. Work the scrub onto wet skin using a massaging motion, and wash it off when you finish.

Step 3

Get rid of sun damage and prevent more from occurring by applying a serum underneath your sunscreen. Look for products that promise to fight free radicals and UV rays. To make your skin look even brighter, June Jacobs, a skin care expert, recommends using a serum with ingredients like mulberry and bearberry extracts, which are natural skin lighteners. Smooth a small amount of serum over your face and body, and allow it to soak in for a few minutes before moving onto step 4.

Step 4

Apply a rich lotion with SPF 15 or higher every morning. Jacobs suggests looking for a product with emollient ingredients to promote smoothness and help prevent flaking skin, which is especially common in dry or harsh weather. Slather the lotion over your entire face and body as often as needed, and reapply it more frequently if you are spending the day outdoors.
