Polk County is in Florida's central region. There are more than 500 lakes in the county and a number of rivers and streams. These bodies of water, combined with the region's warm climate, make fishing a sport enjoyed year round. More than 80 county lakes have boat ramps. Plan to visit Polk County and experience angling for large bass common to county lakes. Bass fishing is so popular that in August, 2010, the state began working on an initiative to gain the title of "Bass Capital of the World."

State Parks

Fish from the banks of one of the three lakes at Colt Creek State Park. Catch-and-release restrictions are placed on largemouth bass caught in the park. If you enjoy the taste of pan-fried catfish, you may keep a maximum of six per day. Bream and bluegill are other species found in the Colt Creek lakes.

Use the boat ramp at Lake Kissimmee State Park to gain entry to the 35,000 acres of Lake Kissimmee. This body of water connects to neighboring creeks and lakes forming the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes managed by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission. Largemouth bass, catfish and bluegill are the common catch of the day in these waters.

Chain of Lakes

Although the waters around the city of Winter Haven are popular for water skiing, the Chain of Lakes' environment also makes it a well-known anglers paradise. The city is surrounded by more than 30 lakes. Lake Shipp Park is host to a number of events, among them the Midflorida Bass Fishing Challenge. This 18-acre park is equipped with a boat ramp.

Lake Weohyakapka

Polk County is home to 7,528-acre Weohyakapka Lake. Floridians more often call it Lake Walk-in-Water. Anglers who enjoy a challenge fish this lake for largemouth bass. Named the state's freshwater fish, largemouth bass often put up a battle that takes them airborne. Drifting live shiners is a recommended method for snagging bass. Lake Weohyakapka has a reputation for producing trophy bass.

Westgate River Ranch

If you desire more out of fishing vacation than pure angling, you might opt to stay at Westgate River Ranch, a real dude ranch in the city of River Ranch. Take an airboat tour on the Kissimmee River to view wildlife. Watch alligators roam the river as bald eagles fly overhead. Rent a boat from the ranch marina and head back to the river to fish. The camp has an on-site pond for catch-and-release fishing. Other amenities at the park include golf, horseback riding and skeet shooting.

Fish Camp

Bring your RV or tent to Lake Wales to fish all day, then head back to camp at night. The Grape Hammock Fish Camp in the area is convenience-driven. You can purchase your fishing license at the on-site bait shop. The camp also rents rustic cabins. Lunker bass are a popular Lake Kissimmee catch in this area.
