Unintentional weight loss will occasionally accompany diarrhea. These problems can be symptoms of serious diseases. If you find that your clothes are not fitting and have become loose, you should weigh yourself and document any changes. According to MedlinePlus, you should consult a doctor if you experience unintentional weight loss of more than 5 percent of your body weight over a six- to 12-month period. If diarrhea is severe or lasts longer than a couple days, call a physician.

Loose Stools

Loose stools comprise the number one symptom of diarrhea. MayoClinic.com characterizes this as watery and loose bowel movements. During a bowel movement, the stool should be firm. If there is liquid, the University of Maryland Medical Center claims it's the result of food and fluid passing through your bowel at a quick rate. The water does not get a chance to be absorbed by your body.

Cramping

Abdominal cramping is also a sign that you may be experiencing diarrhea. If you are having cramps, you can feel a pain that squeezes your abdomen and then lets go. It will usually come and go in waves and is a sign that your body is trying to get you to have a bowel movement. If cramping is severe or does not go away, you should contact a doctor as soon as possible.

Frequent Bowel Urges

Frequent urges to have a bowel movement may indicate that you have diarrhea. These urges are usually present with cramping, but they may also include dull pressure that makes you feel the need to have a bowel movement. If the frequency of these urges increase to severe amounts or if they happen over several days, you need to notify a doctor.

Bloating

If your belly is bloated, MayoClinic.com says you may have diarrhea. Bloating can be caused by excessive gas buildup and can be painful. Over-the-counter gas medicines can help, but consult a doctor or pharmacist to make sure they will not interfere with any medicine you are taking.
