Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication in a class of drugs known as diuretics. Diuretic medications work in the body by helping to rid the system of excess fluid. According to Drugs.com, hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure, fluid retention in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, or edema caused by taking steroids or estrogen. There are some side effects associated with this medication.

Diarrhea

Some patients taking hydrochlorothiazide may experience diarrhea. This side effect may be temporary and lessen over time as the body adjusts to hydrochlorothiazide. Diarrhea that becomes persistent or severe may lead to the development of dehydration and should be reported to a doctor. Patients should avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather and should follow their doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids they should drink, reports Drugs.com.

Headache and Dizziness

Headache and dizziness may occur in patients taking hydrochlorothiazide. Caution should be used while driving or completing activities which may be dangerous until users know how this medication will affect them. According to MedlinePlus, drinking alcohol may increase these side effects and should be avoided. In some cases, headache and dizziness may be symptoms of low blood pressure. Patients taking this medication should be instructed on how to monitor their blood pressure at home. Those who develop low blood pressure should consult a doctor prior to taking another dose of hydrochlorothiazide.

Increased Sensitivity to the Sun

Hydrochlorothiazide may cause an increased sensitivity to the sun. Patients should abstain from being outdoors in the direct sunlight and should avoid the use of tanning beds and sunlamps. The use of protective clothing and sunblock can help to prevent sunburn.

Frequent Urination

Patients may experience frequent urination while taking a diuretic. Frequent urination should go away after taking hydrochlorothiazide for a few weeks, reports MedlinePlus. Avoiding additional fluids prior to bedtime may help lessen frequent urination during nighttime hours.
