Miami is known for its beautiful beaches, radiant residents and sizzling nightlife but there is also an array of interesting adventures awaiting anyone ready to take the plunge. Whether you are looking to take to the sky, the sea or land, there are many challenging activities for you to try in the Magic City.

Before You Go

Before trying any new and unusual activity, be sure you are in good health and have the appropriate gear. Always plan ahead, make reservations and have everything you need to ensure a safe and happy adventure. Whether you are taking to the sea or the sky, make sure to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated and bring a change of clothing to protect yourself from Florida's heat and humidity.

Now You Can Fly

If you have ever wanted to run away and join the circus, you should definitely learn how to fly on a trapeze. Located in Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, the Flying Trapeze School offers evening and weekend classes for people of all ages and abilities. Start out swinging and work your way up to somersaults and catches. If you are really good, you may receive an invitation to attend advanced classes. Jumping out of a plane is another option. Skydive Miami is based in Homestead and offers tandem jumps for beginners. You can jump from 8,000 to 13,500 feet, depending on how much free-falling you desire.

Under the Sea

The Miami-Dade Parks system's EcoAdventures is a great program for outdoor enthusiasts. For reasonable rates, you can explore the wonders of Miami's diverse environment with professional naturalists. The Sea Kayak and Snorkel Adventure will allow you to discover the sea creatures living in Biscayne Bay, including tropical fish, sea stars and rays. You may spot a few dolphins in the Bay but, if want to swim with them, head down to Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, about 80 miles south of Miami in the Florida Keys. There you can get right in the saltwater tank with the marine mammals for hugs, kisses and dorsal-fin tows.

Go Extreme

Skateboarding isn't just for kids, you know. If you have ever wanted to try the half-pipe, head to M.I.A. Skate Park, an indoor skateboarding facility located just west of downtown Miami in Doral. Ladies always skate free and lessons are offered to beginners--just be sure to wear a helmet. While there are no mountains in Miami, X-treme Rock Climbing has more than 14,000 square feet of climbing routes. Equipment is available to rent if you don't have your own.

Eat Off the Land

Get your daily servings of fruit and learn more about agriculture in Miami with a visit to the Fruit & Spice Park tropical botanical garden. The Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department owns and operates the 37-acre facility that is home to more than 500 different varieties of fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices and even some nuts. Guided tours are offered every day and they often host special events and festivals. Sampling is encouraged at the tasting counter.
