If you have had your nostril piercing for at least six months, you can insert a new ring. The rings most commonly worn in nostrils are called captive bead rings. These are C-shaped rings that use pressure to hold an indented ball in place between the two ends. Nostrils are usually pierced at an 18 gauge, making the rings very lightweight and malleable. The thinner the gauge, the easier the ring is to insert by yourself.
Step 1
Wash your hands, piercing and jewelry with warm water and antibacterial soap. Dry thoroughly with a clean paper towel.
Step 2
Push the bead sideways until it pops out of the ring. Set the bead aside.
Step 3
Separate the two ends of the ring by pushing them away from each other horizontally so that the ring forms a slight corkscrew shape.
Step 4
Dip one end of the ring into a drop of antibacterial soap for lubrication.
Step 5
Insert the lubricated end into your piercing from the outside and push it straight through toward your septum. When you feel the ring come through the inside, rotate it so that both ends are on the outside of your nostril.
Step 6
Push the two ends of the ring back together horizontally.
Step 7
Pick up the bead and seat one of the indentations on the lower prong of the ring.
Step 8
Hold the bottom of the ring firmly and push the bead sideways until you feel the other indentation snap into place against the upper prong.
