The Best Bike Pumps With High-Pressure Gauges

What To Look For

The best floor pumps should be easy to use, made with sturdy materials and have an accurate high-pressure gauge. Look for a wide platform preferably made from metal. It should have oversized grips to make it easier for pumping higher pressure tires. The more metal the better. This is most important in the pump's barrel and pressure gauge. After a lot of use the high pressure gauge should still read accurately. Some examples are the Park Tool PFP-4, Topeak Joe Blow Ace, and the Lezyne Alloy Floor Drive. For an exotic floor pump look at the Blackburn Air Tower 5 CF.

Common Pitfalls

Unfortunately, bike pumps are one of those items where you get what you pay for. The more expensive pumps normally last longer and you will get more use out of them. Be wary of pumps made with lots of plastic especially if you are a frequent rider who airs tires up on a regular basis. The best floor pumps cost more, but are made with better parts which is directly related to its retail price. Make sure the manufacturer will replace any parts that fail to work properly, specifically the pressure gauge.

Where To Buy

You can purchase bike pumps at several online retailers such as REI.com, Amazon.com, Performance Bicycle, Bike Nashbar and Competitivecyclist.com. Your local bike shop will also carry some of the high-end floor pumps or can order them for you. Check with the manufacturer's website for a list of certified dealers near you. Some bigger outlet stores like MC Sports carry bike pumps and even have an online store.

Cost

A high-end bike pump costs between $70 and $90. The Park Tool PFP-4 is considered to be on the affordable end at around $55. Topeak's Joe Blow Ace is $99, which is a typical price for the best air pumps. If you want something exceptional, plan on spending more than $100. The Blackburn Air Tower 5 CF, for example, costs about $200.
