A dry, itchy scalp can feel uncomfortable and often results in flaky dandruff that lands on your shoulders. Dry, itchy scalp is often due to a skin rash called seborrheic dermatitis, according to Health Services at Columbia University, and can also be caused by psoriasis or fungal infections. An allergy or a reaction to hair products, perfumes or laundry detergents can also cause the condition.

Moisturizing the scalp can often relieve dryness and itching. See your dermatologist or physician if your dry, itchy scalp continues or if your scalp becomes painful and inflamed.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair. Use a hypoallergenic moisturizing shampoo.

Step 2

Place 4 tbsp. olive, sesame or safflower oil into a small resealable plastic bag. Add 1 drop essential oil of your choice. Beneficial essential oils for dry, itchy scalp include tea tree oil, sandalwood oil, geranium oil or jasmine oil. Use caution when trying any of these oils.

Step 3

Seal the plastic bag. Place the bag in a cup of hot water for about one minute or until the oil is comfortably warm.

Step 4

Massage the warm oil gently into your scalp, using the fleshy part of your fingertips. Massage in a circular motion, concentrating on dry, itchy areas.

Step 5

Allow the oil to remain on your scalp for 10 minutes, then shampoo your hair a second time to remove the oils from your hair. Pat your hair dry with a towel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid scratching dry, itchy scalp areas. Scratching can make the problem worse and can damage your scalp. If you're tempted to scratch, keep your fingernails trimmed short.
