Apple cider vinegar is the most common type of vinegar used in home remedies and is generally distinguished by its hazy, amber consistency. While proponents claim a number of health benefits associated with drinking apple cider vinegar, such as increased body alkalinity and improved digestion, many of the effects attributed to the vinegar are not backed by research as of September 2010. According to the Mayo Clinic, the use of apple cider vinegar as a weight loss device is largely untested, and incorrect dosage can often result in negative reactions with certain diuretic and insulin medications. With a strict adherence to the recommended dosage and a careful eye for detail, practically anyone can begin drinking vinegar for their health.
Step 1
Pour one cup of water into a saucepan and remove the pan from the heat immediately before it begins to boil. Select a 12 oz. coffee mug or other heat-safe drinking container and fill the mug with the hot water.
Step 2
Follow the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, recommended dosage by adding 2 tsp. of organic apple cider vinegar to the water and stirring the mixture until the vinegar is fully diluted. Wait for the beverage to cool and drink it throughout the day.
Step 3
Mix 1 cup of organic apple cider vinegar with ½ a cup of organic honey in a 12 oz. mason jar or drinking container. Stir the beverage until the honey and vinegar are thoroughly mixed. Drink this undiluted concoction in small sips over the course of three to seven days to gain the benefits of this ancient recipe employed by Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, in 400 B.C.
Step 4
Take sips of your apple cider vinegar beverage before eating meals to access the antimicrobial properties prior to digestion. Continue your vinegar-drinking regimen for two to six weeks or indefinitely as desired.
Tips and Warnings
- While many companies offer a less-expensive, conventional apple cider vinegar product, it is generally recommended that you pay the extra cost for an organic variety to reduce your exposure to unwanted pesticides and chemicals.
- Always consult your doctor or personal physician before undergoing a self-administered vinegar diet or cleanse. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any negative benefits from drinking apple cider vinegar.
