Understand that when negative calories is mentioned, it does not actually mean the food contains a negative number of calories. Negative calories refers to the idea that the energy the body expends in digesting and absorbing nutrients from food is greater than the amount of calories that the food contains, resulting in more calories burned than taken in simply by eating the food. There is no scientific evidence to prove this occurs, but eating foods low in calories can help you lose weight.
Leafy Greens
Leafy greens used in salads are considered negative calorie food because they are low caloric to begin with and mostly consist of water. They also are good for you as great sources of vitamins and minerals. Basically any green you would use to make a salad including lettuce, spinach and cabbage would be included. If you add other negative calorie vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and peppers, you can enjoy almost an entire meal of negative calorie foods, and certainly a good snack.
Other Vegetables
Other vegetables packed with vitamins and minerals make a great snack between meals and are considered negative calorie foods. Celery might be the best known of the bunch, but asparagus, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and cucumbers are other so-called negative calorie vegetables. As long as you do not coat them in ranch dressing or vegetable dip and eat the veggies plain, you may be burning more calories than you take in.
Fruit
Most fruits fall into the negative calorie category, including popular snacks such as apples, oranges, strawberries, pineapples, blueberries, grapefruits and watermelon. Other fruits that are reported to have fewer calories than the body needs to digest them include cranberries, guava, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, blackberries, rhubarb and mangoes, according to Weight Loss for All. The high quantities of vitamins and minerals in fruits may require more energy from the body to break them down.
