Highlights can add depth, interest and spunk to your style. Dark hair becomes bold and defined with the addition of streaks and highlights. Generally, colors that are no more than three shades lighter than your natural color are the best choice for highlights, and with dark hair, there are many options. Keep in mind, however, the shape of your face and consider what might appear flattering on you when choosing your style--instead of just pursuing a popular look.

Bold Colors

If you are looking to make a statement with your highlights, try a bold red, burgundy or crimson shade. These shades are daring and youthful and will contrast well with naturally dark hair colors. Keep in mind, however, that bold colors may give fair-skinned faces a washed-out look.

Do-It-Yourself Highlights

Do-it-yourself hair kits may be inexpensive in comparison to dye jobs done at a salon, but if you're looking for quality dyes and a professional look, you may consider paying a bit more. Even if you are a pro at coloring your hair, you may have difficulty adding highlights and streaks. You could end up with scantly colored strands and missed spots. In addition, a professional is better trained to give you tips on what will work best for you and your do. And while you're at the salon, you can purchase some quality conditioners and products that will help you maintain your new highlights.

Face-Framing Highlights

You can apply highlights to the sides and bangs of your hair to create a framed effect. Consider the color of your skin and eyes when choosing a shade. These highlights can give a drab do a boost of life, while also giving you a more polished appearance.

Chunky Highlights

Chunky highlights can give you a contemporary appearance, as they are more intentional than thin streaks and highlights. If you are all about bold, apply a contrasting color like blue, pink or orange. The result---funky, chunky highlights.

Subtle Highlights

To add a subtle spark to your dark hair, try highlights that appear natural and sun-kissed. For dark hair, subtle highlights should be close to your shade and may include caramel, bronzed or golden shades. The highlights are often referred to as "low lights."
