Indocin SR, also known as indomethacin, is the extended-release form of Indocin. Indocin is used to treat inflammation by blocking prostaglandins that cause an inflammatory response in the body. While this medication can effectively treat inflammation, it can also cause some potentially serious side effects. Review these possible side effects to determine if you can safely use Indocin SR.
Pregnancy Complications
According to the University of California San Diego, Indocin SR is in pregnancy category C. This means that the drug may be harmful to an unborn fetus. Do not take this drug during the last three months of pregnancy unless specifically instructed to do so by your doctor. This drug can also pass into a mother's breast milk and affect a breastfed baby. Discuss this drug with your doctor before taking it while breastfeeding.
Allergic Reaction
Indocin SR can cause a serious allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic response to the drug. These signs include itching, rash, hives and swelling of the face, tongue, throat and lips. Swelling of the throat can make it difficult or impossible to breathe, increasing the severity of this possible side effect.
Circulatory Problems
Indocin SR can increase the risk of circulatory problems such as stroke and heart attack. This risk increases with long-term use of the drug. If you are scheduled to have coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), also known as heart bypass surgery, do not take Indocin SR just before or immediately after having this procedure.
Gastrointestinal Bleeding
Indocin SR can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, especially if it is used for a long period of time. This risk is greater in older adults and can lead to perforation in the gastrointestinal tract. Seek medical attention if you exhibit any signs or symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding, including coughing up blood, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
Other Serious Side Effects
Many side effects can occur with the use of Indocin SR. Contact a physician immediately if you experience jaundice, coughing up blood, swelling, decreased urination, inability to urinate, chest pain, shortness of breath, vision or balance problems, weakness, slurred speech, stomach pain, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, dark urine, low fever, severe tingling, muscle weakness, severe pain and bruising.
Less-Serious Side Effects
Indocin SR can cause side effects that are considered relatively minor if they are not persistent or bothersome. These less-serious side effects of Indocin SR include bloating, dizziness, gas, heartburn, upset stomach, constipation, diarrhea, skin rash, blurred vision, itching and ringing in the years.
Drug Interactions
Several drugs can interact with Indocin SR and cause potentially serious side effects. Taking this drug with Celexa, Cymbalta, Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft or Effexor can cause easy bruising or bleeding. Inform your doctor if you are taking cyclosporine, blood thinners, diuretics, digoxin, lithium, probenecid, methotrexate, steroids, beta-blockers, aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Let your doctor know about any herbal supplements, vitamins or over-the-counter drugs you are taking, because these can also interact with Indocin SR.
