Metabolism is the process by which the body uses fat stores and food as fuel. Simply put, the higher your metabolism, the faster you will burn fat. Several methods can help increase fat metabolism in a healthy way that provides long-term results. Starvation diets however, which many people use to lose weight, actually slow your metabolism. Physical activity combined with a healthy diet is the best way to increase the rate at which you burn fat.
Step 1
Eat fewer calories. Calculate your recommended daily caloric intake and decrease it by 10 percent. Make sure you don't go below 1,200 calories daily, as this will cause your body to go into starvation mode, and it will actually slow down your metabolism. According to the Mayo Clinic, metabolism decreases with age, so fewer calories are necessary to maintain or lose weight.
Step 2
Drink tea, preferably green tea, several times daily. According to the University of Maryland, several studies have shown evidence that green tea and caffeine may increase metabolism. Green tea is known for its health benefits, including antioxidant effects, but it may also help increase metabolism. Enjoy a cup of tea with each meal so that the higher metabolic rate is maintained throughout the day.
Step 3
Lift weights at least three days a week. According to the Natural Choice Directory, lifting weights increases body mass. Larger muscles increase metabolism, causing the body to burn fat faster. Use hand weights, machines at the local gym or bottles filled with water at home.
Step 4
Engage in aerobic activity for 30 minutes five days a week. Aerobic activity is defined as exercise that maintains the heart at between 70 and 80 percent of its maximum rate. Choose an activity that fulfills this requirement, such as swimming, jogging or cycling. Warm up and cool down for 10 minutes both before and after the exercise. Aerobic exercise burns fat and increases metabolism by toning the large muscle groups.
Step 5
Drink at least 64 oz. of water daily. According to the University of Maryland, the body retains water when there isn't enough coming in. Drinking adequate amounts of water helps maintain smooth running of the body's processes, including metabolism. In addition, water removes waste products from the body, including fat.
