If your body expects something sweet after every meal, you may have a sugar addiction. If you generally eat dessert after dinner, your body may crave sugar when you skip dessert. Additionally, sugar cravings may occur in the late afternoon, when glucose levels drop, according to "Shape" magazine in the article "Conquer Food Cravings." By cutting sugar out of your diet as much as possible, you can gain control of your eating habits without giving in to your cravings.

Step 1

Remove processed and packaged foods from your diet as much as possible, recommends psychologist Dr. Charles Raison in the article "How Can I Break My Sugar Addiction" on CNN.com. Cutting processed snacks and meals out of your life will remove added sugar from your diet that you may not even know you were consuming.

Step 2

Brush your teeth and gargle with mouthwash immediately after eating a meal. You may be less likely to eat after brushing your teeth, and sweet foods may not taste as good when they are masked by toothpaste.

Step 3

Go for a walk after eating lunch or dinner to get the same serotonin increase you get when you're eating sugar, says Dr. Mallika Marshall in the article "Stop Those Sugar Cravings" on CBSNews.com.

Step 4

Substitute naturally sweet fruit for processed sugar. Although eating a strawberry isn't exactly the same as eating a candy bar, it may help curb your craving enough for it to pass.

Step 5

Consider giving up sugar completely to totally conquer the craving. If you are unable to eat a small amount of sugar without binging, you may be more apt to stick to your plan if you take sugar out of the equation.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keeping sugary foods out of the house may keep you from thinking about them.
  • Consult a doctor before making any drastic changes to your diet, especially if you have health problems.
