Thompson's Prostate Manager is an herbal formula that aids with prostate health. According to the manufacturer's website, Thompson's Prostate Manager may alleviate swelling and inflammation of the prostate. It is intended for men only, comes in a pill form, and is taken once daily. Enlargement of the prostate is uncomfortable and painful and is due mainly to inflammation, which is why Thompson's adds several anti-inflammatory herbs to its formula.
While many of the herbs and vitamins in Thompson's Prostate Manager are used in health supplements and vitamin formulas, the FDA has not found conclusive results to either confirm or deny their purported health benefits. Consult with you doctor before taking an herb or herb supplemental formulas.
Saw Palmetto and Nettle
Saw palmetto is the fruit of the Serenoa repens plant and is commonly used in many herbal remedies for male reproductive health. According to Michael Tierra, author of "The Way of Herbs," saw palmetto is used to reduce enlargement of the prostate. Michael Tierra also writes that saw palmetto works best on the prostate when mixed with an herb that boosts the immune system like echinacea. Nettle, while not echinacea, acts much like it on the immune system. Nettle contains high amounts of sterols, which stimulate white blood cell production. White blood cells fight infections and inflammation by attacking viruses and bacteria. In Thompson's Prostate Manager, nettle works with saw palmetto to help reduce the inflammation that causes enlargement of the prostate.
Pygeum Stem and Lycopene
Another herb in Thompson's Prostate Manager with anti-inflammatory properties is pygeum stem. According to MedlinePlus, pygeum is made from the bark of the African pygeum tree and is useful in prostate and kidney health. Documentation for its use in African tribal medicine for promoting urinary health goes back at least a thousand years. The pygeum in Thompson's Prostate Manager formula can help provide relief to men suffering from a frequent need to urinate by reducing prostate swelling.
While not an herb, lycopene aids in prostate health. According to MayoClinic.com, lycopene is a carotenoid found in the prostate and other organs of the body that contains many anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins and minerals like Vitamin D3, zinc gluconate and selenium, which are essential for reproductive health and immune system functioning, are added to Thompson's Prostate Manager formula. Vitamin D3 is known for its part in bone health, but it is also good for maintaining proper hormone levels in the body. Zinc is an immune booster and beneficial in fighting infections and inflammation. Selenium works with zinc in fighting free radicals and helps to strengthen cellular walls.
