It is normal to feel anxious or depressed at times, but some people suffer symptoms of anxiety and depression every day. This can make it difficult to carry out the activities of daily living. According to Anxiety Disorders Association of America, anxiety and depression often go hand-in-hand; almost half of those with depression also suffer from anxiety. There are medications available to treat both disorders, but the medications do have some side effects.

Drowsiness

Celexa, generic name citalopram, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or an SSRI. According to Drugs.com, it balances the levels of the chemical serotonin in the brain, improving mood in some instances. One of its side effects is drowsiness. You should not drive or operate any machinery until you ascertain how this medication will affect you. Xanax can also cause the side effect of drowsiness. Limit alcohol use while taking either of these medications because alcohol can exacerbate drowsiness.

Insomnia

Xanax, generic name alprazolam, is a benzodiazepine drug that works by producing a calming effect on the brain. According to Drugs.com, Xanax is used to treat panic attacks and anxiety caused by depression. Another side effect of Xanax is insomnia, or sleeplessness. Celexa can also cause insomnia in some who take it.

Hallucinations and Confusion

Hallucinations are a serious side effect of Celexa, according to PubMed Health. Those taking Celexa may hear voices that do not exist and see things that aren't really there. It is also possible for this to happen in those who take Xanax. If you experience hallucinations, notify your physician immediately. It is also possible for Celexa and Xanax to cause mental confusion.

Seizures

A seizure is a serious medical event that requires immediate medical attention. Xanax and Celexa both have the potential to cause seizures in some users. According to PubMed, those affected by any incidence of seizures should notify their doctors at once.

Suicidal Feelings

A very serious side effect of some anti-depressants, including Xanax and Celexa, are thoughts of suicide. It is possible to become more depressed and have feelings of hurting yourself while taking either of these medications. According to PubMed Health, this side effect is more prevalent in teenagers and young adults, particularly for those taking Celexa. A doctor should monitor patients for this side effect when beginning treatment with either of these medications.

Severe Allergic Reaction

It is possible to have a severe allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis, to Celexa and Xanax. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include an itchy skin rash, hives, swelling of the mouth and throat along with shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. This is a life-threatening situation that requires immediate medical intervention.
