Symptoms of Yeast Infection in Males

A yeast infection occurs because of an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida, which naturally lives in the mouth and vagina. Some people may think that yeast infections only occur for females. While females experience yeast infections more frequently than males, it is possible for men to have an overgrowth of yeast, as well. A compromised immune system, taking anti-rejection medications and taking antibiotics increase the risk of males developing a yeast infection. Yeast may cause a rash on the penis and in the diaper area for small children. A yeast infection may also occur in the mouth.

Redness

A red rash occurs on the skin of males with a yeast infection. When the yeast transmits from a female to a male during sexual intercourse, the penis may appear reddened and inflamed. The area at the tip of the penis, called the glans, is the most common location for the inflammation. The inflammation and redness may occur on the foreskin of uncircumcised males. Boys with an overgrowth of yeast in the diaper area may experience a rash anywhere in the diapered area and sometimes, it may spread as small red dots outside the area. Adding cornstarch to a yeast diaper rash may worsen the infection, according to FamilyDoctor.org.

Burning and Itching

A yeast infection in the groin may cause a male to experience skin irritation. The male may feel a burning or itching around the tip of the penis, according to MayoClinic.com. Young males who still wear diapers may have a burning or stinging sensation on the skin around the groin, including the buttocks and inner thighs.

White Spots

An overgrowth of yeast may occur in the mouth of both males and females. The infection, also referred to as thrush, may cause symptoms such as white spots or patches in the inside of the mouth. The white spots may occur on the roof of the mouth, the inner cheeks, gums and on the tongue. The lesions do not rub off easily and may cause bleeding from the underlying tissue if irritated.
