Liposuction is a cosmetic treatment to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body. After liposuction, follow instructions for post-operative care of the area. Adherence to these steps will increase the likelihood that you achieve your desired results.
Definition
Liposuction is a surgical operation that removes fat from specific areas of the body through a suction technique. It is most often performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. The goal of liposuction is not overall weight loss. Instead, it is performed on patients who have a stable weight, but who may have too much body fat in one particular area. If you are overweight or obese, you will lose more total body fat through proper diet and exercise -- not liposuction.
Procedure
You will be given intravenous sedation or general anesthesia before the procedure. Once sedated, your surgeon will make a small incision over the desired area of the body. A thin hollow tube is inserted through the incision. This tool is used to loosen the excess fat. This fat is then suctioned out of your body using a surgical vacuum.
Immediate Care
Once your surgery is completed, the treated area is wrapped in absorbent pads and a compression garment or elastic bandages. This is done to limit swelling and form a smoother, better shape by compressing your skin to your new body contours. Small drainage devices will be placed in the incisions to help remove excess blood and fluid. Most of the fluid will drain out within the first 24 to 48 hours. You will be given instructions on what concerns to look for, medications to take to help the healing process and when to return for a follow-up appointment. You can expect to wear the bandages or compression garment for three to six days.
At Home
Enlist someone to drive you home after surgery and rest for the remaining part of the day. The following day, you can walk and resume light physical activity. Keep the incision clean by washing the area gently with soap and water. Do not use ice packs, heating pads or bandages on the incision site. If you experience shortness of breath, chest pains or irregular heartbeats, contact your doctor immediately.
Recovery Time
Resume normal activities within two to four days. However, expect to experience soreness and fatigue during this time. Swelling will subside in about four weeks. Within several months, you should see your desired results. The results of cosmetic surgery are never guaranteed. However, liposuction is generally considered an effective treatment option.
