What To Look For
Cross country pants are designed for the motion involved in cross country skiing. Unlike downhill ski pants, they're typically a soft-shell garment with stretchy, semi-fitted fabric that repels water and wind while providing breathability. Look for pants made out of fast-drying, wicking, four-way stretch polyester/elastane blended fabric with a snug, elastic waist band. A water-repellent finish will help keep water from soaking in. Articulated knees and gusseted crotch areas provide free, comfortable movement. If you need pockets to carry items with you, look for pockets with zippered closures to keep your personal items from falling out. Ankle zippers are useful for taking off the pants with your boots on.
Common Pitfalls
Cross country skiing pants should be a comfortable, stretchy shell. Like other winter clothing, pants are designed to work in a system. The outwear pants will protect you from wind and water, while base layer pants or long johns will serve to keep you warm. To keep your cross country skiing pants as mobile as possible, avoid heavy, insulated pants that don't move as well, and layer underneath if you need extra insulation.
Where To Buy
Outdoor sporting good stores typically stock cross country skis and supplies, as do some ski shops. You may be able to find suitable soft-shell pants even at alpine ski shops that don't carry cross country equipment. To find the best fitting pants, wear your typical base layer skiing pants and try the cross country pants on in the store before buying.
Internet retailers like REI, Backcountry and L.L. Bean stock pants designed specifically for cross country skiing.
Cost
In late-summer 2010, cross country ski pants from manufacturers like Swix, Craft and Ibex retailed for $75 to $200.
