Its versatility and smooth, creamy texture makes yogurt one of the most widely consumed dairy products on the market. Natural yogurt has a short shelf life, mostly due to the high content of live bacteria and cultures. If you buy natural yogurt in bulk to save money or you make your own, it can be difficult to eat it all before it goes sour. In cases such as this, you can freeze the yogurt in any normal freezer to preserve its freshness for up to a month.
Step 1
Transfer the yogurt to a freezer container to ensure it is stored and sealed properly. Also, the original yogurt package may not be strong enough to withhold the expansion from the yogurt as it freezes. Be sure to leave ½ inch of space at the top of the container for expansion.
Step 2
Put the lid on the container and make sure it's sealed as tightly as possible.
Step 3
Write the current date on the lid to help you keep track of how old the yogurt is.
Step 4
Place the container in the freezer. Put it on a sturdy surface to ensure it doesn't tip over.
Tips and Warnings
- Freeze yogurt before the expiration date. Thaw yogurt in the refrigerator when ready to use it. If possible, give it 24 hours to completely thaw.
