Quanicassee is an unincorporated community in Wisner Township in Michigan's Tuscola County that lies on the Saginaw Bay at the mouth of the Quanicassee River. A popular sport-fishing spot, Quanicassee has many marinas, fishing charter businesses, bait shops and fishing guides to help you reach the many species of fish in the area.

Types

Saginaw Bay at Quanicassee, Michigan, is known for walleye, steelhead, catfish and perch. Coho and Chinook salmon, brown and lake trout, catfish, and steelhead are abundant in the Quanicassee, Huron and Saginaw rivers. Bass, pan fish and northern pike are plentiful in the inner, eastern and outer parts of Saginaw Bay.

Methods

Trolling and jigging are two of the most popular fishing methods used in Quanicassee, Michigan. Fish eat smaller fish, insects and small crustaceans, so they bite on bait that resembles their favorite foods. Troll straight out toward Sebawaing in the spring from Quanicassee with crank-baits, spinner rigs and crawler harnesses, or jig with minnows or night crawlers. Use flies to fish for bass, trout, salmon and steelhead in the rivers or troll with spoons, plugs, dodgers or spinners.

Geography

Fish are found between 13 and 20 feet deep during the spring and in deeper waters during the summer. Catfish, salmon, trout and steelhead are found in the Quanicassee River, while walleye, pike, bass, perch and other pan fish tend to favor the river's mouth. Ice fishing is good in Quanicassee's Vanderbilt Park. Other good Quanicassee fishing spots include the edge of the shipping channel from the bay into Lake Huron, along the Callahan Reef, near the marinas, east of the Spark Plug near buoys 11 and 12, and at Finn and Thomas roads.

Charters

SWAT Charter Service offers Quanicassee fishing trips for parties on Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay to fish for walleye, perch, brown trout, lake trout, steelhead, and king and coho salmon. Walleye Express Charters runs charters year-round and specializes in walleye fishing.

Considerations

Anglers 17 years old and older must have a Michigan fishing license. An all-species license is required to fish for trout and salmon. Storms and high wind can create hazards for boaters on Saginaw Bay, and unseasonable temperatures can make ice unsafe for winter anglers near Quanicassee.
