4D Ultrasound Risks

Ultrasound technology has changed dramatically over the past decade. Traditional 2D ultrasounds have morphed into 3D and 4D ultrasounds. Pregnant women now have the option of having elective ultrasounds in 4D that allows the families to view the baby as she moves, kicks and even sucks on her little thumbs. These elective ultrasounds do not require a physician order and some doctors and medical professionals advise that there are risks associated with 4D ultrasounds. The FDA does not support the use of 4D ultrasounds for entertainment purposes. Women should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor to make an informed decision.

False Reassurance

When ultrasounds are performed outside of the medical setting, Colorado Springs Health Partners explains that women may be given false reassurance that all is well with the pregnancy. Technicians who perform 4D ultrasounds at these facilities may not be properly trained ultrasound technicians. An untrained technician may not have the skills required to detect abnormalities. Elective 4D ultrasounds are never to be considered a replacement for prenatal care and prescribed ultrasounds that are ordered and read by an actual physician.

Undetermined Risk

According to the Lippincott's Nursing Center website, the true risk of 4D ultrasounds is not adequately known yet. These ultrasounds emit high levels of energy and the long term effects of 4D ultrasounds have not been able to be fully studied yet due to their relative newness in the market. Although the exact risks and effects of these ultrasounds are still in question, it is generally accepted by many doctors and the FDA that 4D ultrasounds do carry some risk.

Increased Temperature

The form of energy used in 4D ultrasounds has been known to increase the temperature inside the uterus, notes Colorado Springs Health Partners. The energy may also cause vibrations within the uterus that may even be jarring to the baby.
