Hormones are chemicals produced by the body to help enable many functions, including metabolism, growth and mood. When the body produces the wrong levels of certain hormones, including calcitrol, leptin, insulin and cortisol, weight gain can occur. Eating the proper nutrients can help the body balance hormone levels and burn fat.

Dairy

The calcium and complex carbohydrates found in dairy products jumps the metabolism into action. According to Michael B. Zemel, Ph.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee, calcium reduces the production of calcitrol, a hormone that stimulates fat cell production. During a study, participants who were dieting and consumed 1,200 to 1,300 mg of calcium daily lost almost twice the amount of weight as those who had less calcium in their diet.

Salmon

Salmon is another fat-burning food option. It contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that benefit brain function, lessen the risk of heart disease and lower the body's level of leptin. Leptin is a hormone that reduces appetite and speeds up the metabolic rate. Lower leptin levels result in more calories used for energy. Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids include tuna, sardines, flaxseeds and walnuts.

Whole Grains

Whole grains, such as spelt, oats, bulgur, whole wheat and barley, provide a variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fiber. Whole grains are digested slowly, which keep insulin levels down. Insulin is produced in the conversion of carbohydrates to glucose or blood sugar, the body's main source of fuel. High levels of insulin trigger the body to store fat. Whole grain breads, oats and rice help manage healthy blood sugar levels.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables, particularly when consumed whole and unprocessed, are full of antioxidants and fiber, which have been shown to reduce inflammation and control cortisol production. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands. If levels are elevated due to inflammation and stress, cortisol can increase weight. Fruits and vegetables contain a variety of nutrients that, as an added bonus, help control weight too. Consume a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables on a regular basis for the best results.
