Bowflex machines are strength-training devices suitable for use in the home. To prepare the device for a workout, the user routes cables through certain pulleys, then connects the ends of the cables to resistance rods and grip accessories; by pulling on these accessories, the user is then able to perform an exercise. Over time, the machine's components may wear out, which can affect the device's performance. Performing regular maintenance may lead you to the source of the problem while helping prevent future problems.
Step 1
Stand to one side of the bundle of resistance rods. Disconnect all of the resistance rods attached to the cables, one rod at a time. Examine the entire length of the cables and the device's pulleys for signs of damage. Inspect the straps on each of the accessories for frayed threads. If necessary, install replacement components.
Step 2
Remove the bench from the seat rail. Pull out the pin attached to the side of the seat rail, then turn the pin counterclockwise. Slide the seat back and forth on the rail; if the seat sticks, clean the rail with dish soap and a damp washcloth. Dry the rail thoroughly, then return the seat to its original location; turn the pin clockwise until it snaps into place. Replace the bench.
Step 3
Inspect each of the connection points. If the gym rattles during a workout, tighten the bolts and screws securing the device's components together.
Step 4
Determine the total amount of resistance you want, and begin connecting the rods to the cables. Start with the rods near the outside edge of the bundle and work your way inward; this will keep the rods from overlapping during use.
