Most models of fishing poles come equipped with loops attached at various points to guide the line from the reel to the tip of the pole. As the line passes through these loops, the friction may eventually cause fraying and other signs of wear; this may increase the possibility of the line snapping once you have caught a fish. As such, it is important to install fresh line on the spool at the start of each fishing season, which will require you to first learn how to properly thread the line on the pole.
Step 1
Pull out a length of used line from the reel's spool. Tie the end of the line to an empty fishing-line spool. Turn the spool to unravel and collect the old fishing line from the reel. Cut the loop securing the end of the line to the reel's spool. Discard the old fishing line.
Step 2
Position the spool of fishing line in front of the tip of the pole. Pull a small length of line off of the spool, to determine which direction the line will unravel. If necessary, rotate the spool so that the fishing line will unravel in a counterclockwise direction when you pull it towards the reel.
Step 3
Loop the line around the reel's spool. Take the end of the line and wrap three loose loops around the length of line located just above the spool. Bring the end of the line down to the bottom loop, then pass it up through the center of all three loops, forming a lasso. Push the lasso into place on the spool. Cut off any excess line protruding from the knot.
Step 4
Turn the reel to begin loading the line. Continue loading until the level of the line reaches approximately an 1/8 inch below the edge of the reel's spool, then cut the line.
Step 5
Pull enough fishing line from the reel to reach all the way to the tip of the pole. Pinch the end of the fishing line. Pass the pinched end of fishing line through the loop located nearest to the reel. Continue working your way through the loops until you reach the tip of the pole.
Step 6
Straighten the pinched end of the fishing line. Attach a floater, sinker and hook to the end of the fishing line.
