During the dry, winter months, static electricity can make your smooth hair look frizzy and messy. Since hair is so light, it's often affected by friction and indoor heating, resulting in a hair-raising look that can be embarrassing. Control hair static by preventing it in the shower, then adding a few tricks to your handbag to keep it under control all day long. Some fast fixes could give you smoother, sleeker hair all winter long.
Step 1
Coat your hair with a good-quality conditioner in the shower. When you wash your hair, you strip it of its natural oils. Those oils would have weighed your hair down to prevent static. Conditioner helps add some of the moisture back into your hair so it's weighted down. Then, use a heat protecting spray if you plan to blow dry your hair, urges "Cosmopolitan" magazine. It will seal in moisture so your styling routine doesn't leave your hair dry and prone to static.
Step 2
Run a dryer sheet over your head before you leave your house. As you get dressed, the various fabrics of your clothing can make your hair charged and prone to static and flyaways. By running a dryer sheet over your head, you deposit a fine layer of fabric softener over your hair, which weighs it down and stops further charges in your hair.
Step 3
Slip a silk scarf over your head before you add your winter hat. Winter hats are often made of wool and other knitted materials, all which create heavy friction and dreaded "hat hair." Silk produces very little friction, making it an ideal barrier between your hair and your favorite warm hat in the winter months.
Step 4
Wear leather shoes instead of synthetic materials. Rubber, PVC and faux leathers can act as conductors when you're walking on the carpet in your office all day. That static charge can travel up your body, making you shock your coworkers and struggle with flyaway hair. Leather is a natural material, beauty expert Valerie Monroe tells Oprah.com, and it allows your body to ground the electricity for less static overall.
Step 5
Keep a bottle of hand moisturizer in your purse or briefcase. When you replenish the moisture on your dry hands, don't rub it all into your skin. Allow a very thin layer to remain on your hands, and then run your hands through your hair. It will weight down hair to relieve your static. In a pinch, lip balm can create the same effect.
