The adrenal glands help regulate water and salt in the body, metabolize carbohydrates and control blood sugar. Adrenal exhaustion is caused by the adrenal glands not functioning properly. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, lack of ability to handle stress, dark circles under the eyes, dizziness and a craving for salty or sweet snacks. There are many herbs that can be used to treat adrenal exhaustion. They are considered "adaptogenic" if they stimulate or suppress adrenal function.
Astragalus
According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," astragalus helps the adrenal glands function and helps to reduce stress. The root of this Asian plant is boiled and used to boost immunity. It's often combined with other herbs and is a staple of Chinese medicine.
Echinacea
"Prescription for Nutritional Healing" recommends echinacea as an herbal treatment for adrenal disorders. Echinacea is most commonly used to treat or prevent colds and the flu. It's also known as coneflower. Some people experience allergic reactions after taking echinacea. It's contraindicated for those allergic to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums or marigolds.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is used to improve liver function and is good for adrenal disorders. The active ingredient is silymarin, which acts as an antioxidant.
Siberian Ginseng
Ginseng strengthens the adrenal glands. It's contraindicated for use by those with high blood pressure and hypoglycemia. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative medicine, ginseng roots are dried and "used to make tablets or capsules, extracts, and teas, as well as creams or other preparations for external use."
Rhodiola Rosea
Rhodiola rosea, also known as golden root, is used to reduce aging, stress and fatigue. It strengthens the immune system and aids its response to stress. It can be taken in supplement form.
Licorice
Licorice root is similar to the human hormone adrenaline. The dried roots are made into supplements. It shouldn't be used for more than seven consecutive days, as it can lead to high blood pressure.
