Baseball is a tradition that is passed from generation to generation in American families. One of baseball's great lures is that generations of fans watch and appreciate the sport together. The youngest generation is not only thrilled to watch the game, they get an even bigger thrill from playing it. The skills involved are not easy to learn, but teachers with patience and talent can help kids learn the fundamentals of baseball.

Step 1

Hit the baseball. When you step into the batter's box, prepare to hit the ball by taking the proper stance. That means your left foot--if you are a right-handed hitter--must be facing the pitcher and your weight must be on your back leg so you can bring your weight forward in order to hit the pitch hard.

Step 2

Catch the ball with two hands. You will have a glove on your catching hand and use your throwing hand to cover the ball in the glove. This advice holds for the youngest youth league players to veteran big league players. If the ball is waist-height or below, turn the glove so the fingers are facing the ground. If the ball comes in above waist level, turn your glove so the fingers are facing up. This helps you make the catch and avoid injury.

Step 3

Bring the baseball to ear level when you are learning to throw. Place your forefinger and middle finger on top of the ball and place your thumb undeneath it to get in the proper throwing positon. Step with your left leg and then bring your arm forward while snapping your wrist in order to throw the ball with velocity.

Step 4

Run to first base after hitting the baseball. Run as fast as you can all the way through the bag; you can overrun first base without being tagged out as long as you don't make a move to run to second. However, you can be tagged out if you overrun second or third base. Practice sliding so you can avoid the tag safely.
