How to Prepare Chamomile Hair Dye

While homemade herbal hair dyes do not typically produce the bright, vibrant colors found in a box of chemical hair dye from the drugstore, they are easier on the environment and also on your body. They are also typically less expensive, readily made from ingredients that may already be in your home as the makings for tea, or assembled from inexpensive bulk herbs purchased at the health food store.

Step 1

Bring a quart of water to a boil on the stove. Add 1/2 cup of fresh or dried chamomile flowers and let it boil for 30 minutes. Place a cover on the pot while it is boiling.

Step 2

Place clean cheesecloth over a wide-mouth glass jar and secure in place with a rubber band. Let the boiled chamomile mixture cool to a touchable temperature, then pour it through the cheesecloth into the jar. Discard the solid materials strained out by the cheesecloth and remove the cheesecloth from the jar. Rinse the cheesecloth and set it aside, or discard it, as you prefer.

Step 3

Wash your hair as normal and towel it dry. Place a bucket or large bowl underneath your head and proceed to pour the chamomile mixture over your hair 15 to 20 times, catching the excess in the bowl and reusing it each time.

Step 4

Wring out your hair gently and wrap a towel around it, or use a shower cap to cover your hair. Wait at least 30 minutes before rinsing the mixture out.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can also add lemon to your homemade hair dye. Other common ingredients for lightening hair that you may choose to add are cider vinegar, honey, rhubarb root and marigold flowers.
