Whether you're a beginning rider or more advanced, you'll find a camp or riding vacation for adults that fits your needs in the State of Texas. Known for its open spaces, Texas features a number of ranches and other venues that offer horseback riding. Unlike horseback riding camps for children, adult horseback riding camps are more likely to be called horseback riding experiences or vacation packages. Experiences and packages often feature all-day or partial-day riding with the same group for a weekend or more but typically include a private room.
Ranches
If you're hoping for a full Texas experience, a ranch may be best. Many Texas ranches, such as Running-R Guest Ranch, offer on-site ranch or horseback riding experiences. Participants spend a day or 1/2 day riding the hills with a group or sign up for daily lessons. Lengths and types of lessons vary, depending on the ranch. Lessons may include everything from the basics of riding to roping and more advanced techniques. Although some ranches do not offer lodging on-site, many feature cabins for individuals, couples or families to stay in during the ranch experience.
Adults with Children
For individuals who can't seem to get away from the children, many adult horseback riding camps and experiences offer children's programs, including basic riding classes, meant to coincide with adult programs, leaving you to ride without your children.
If you'd prefer to pair up with your children, some horseback riding camps and venues, such as Hill Country Equestrian Lodge, offer parent and child camp programs. The programs typically feature riding experiences for both parent and child, and activities outside of riding are usually scheduled for both the adult and the child separately. So you can enjoy some time apart.
Beginner Riders
Texas adult horseback riding camps and lessons are open to every level of learner, including beginners. Most adult programs or group lessons pair individuals of a similar age range and similar experience level. Informing the camp you choose of your experience level and age when you register will help to keep complications to a minimum.
Advanced Riders
For more advanced riders, full- or all-day riding experiences are offered as part of many adult horseback riding camps or riding experiences in Texas. Advanced rider programs typically feature more time in the saddle than other programs and may include specialty lessons, such as jumping. Depending on the skill of the group, rides for advanced riders also may include riding over tougher terrain than otherwise.
Cost
The cost of adult horseback riding camp varies. Factors affecting price include the number of days you stay, whether or not lodging is provided and whether or not meals are included. An adult day camp in Texas can cost as little as $120 each day per person for a 1/2 day experience as of September 2009. A week-long camp program with board, lessons and other activities can cost $1,365 per week or more per person, depending on the venue, as of September 2009.
