A Sign of Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease, also known as heart disease, is a term used to describe several conditions that affect the heart. Coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects and arrhythmias are all considered heart disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States and worldwide. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of the disease early. Heart disease can be treated and sometimes prevented with simple diet and lifestyle changes.

Chest Pain

Chest pain is a common symptom of heart disease, although it does not always signal a heart-related problem. Pain is associated with tightness or pressure in the chest and may spread to the arms, neck and back. According to the Mayo Clinic, it may also be associated with difficulty swallowing or pain that changes when you move, breathe or cough. Prolonged, inexplicable chest pain can signify a heart attack, heartburn or angina, among other conditions. Seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis.

Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath, also known as dyspnea, may be a result of several different causes. It may be something as simple as an airway blockage due to congestion or even stress. However, heart disease can also cause dyspnea. According to MedlinePlus, if the heart is unable to pump adequate blood carrying oxygen to the body, breathlessness may arise. If symptoms such as difficulty breathing after minimal exertion, difficulty sleeping at night, wheezing, chest pain or tightness in the throat arise, contact a health professional to discuss symptoms.

Fatigue

Tiredness can be a symptom of heart disease. If the heart is not pumping enough blood to meet the body's needs, the body may be deprived of oxygen. This not only makes it difficult to perform daily activities like walking or doing errands, but also disrupts sleep. Fatigue often becomes more severe as heart disease progresses, making it important to address the symptom early.

Nausea

Nausea and a reduction in appetite may be a symptom of heart disease. According to the Heart Rhythm Society, this may be true even if a person has not eaten for a while. The feeling of nausea may come and go. If the feeling persists, a physician may be able to provide medication to alleviate symptoms.

Rapid Heartbeat

According to the Heart Rhythm Society, if the heart is unable to pump blood normally, it may develop a rapid heartbeat to offset the negative effects. Symptoms are heart palpitations or an irregular heartbeat. If an arrhythmia is associated with other symptoms of heart disease such as shortness of breath or chest pain, it is important to contact a health-care professional.
