A football mouthpiece is a vital piece of protective equipment. In a fast-moving and physical game like football that features a significant number of hard collisions, players need to wear protective equipment. This includes a protective guard for the teeth. This malleable piece of plastic will prevent teeth from chipping or breaking in the event of a hard collision. Mouthpieces have become easier to mold and form fit, and that helps players get the protection and security they need.
Step 1
Buy the correct size mouthpiece that you need. Don't buy an adult's mouthpiece for a young player. They will be too big and loose and they will also make it difficult to breathe while participating in football if the mouthpiece is too big.
Step 2
Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Place the mouthpiece that will be used on a plastic holder to avoid being burned. Place the mouthpiece in the boiling water for 30 seconds.
Step 3
Pull the mouthpiece out of the water and shake off the excess water. Have the player who will be using the mouthpiece bite into it for 15 seconds in order to form-fit it to the player's mouth, teeth and gums.
Step 4
Place the mouthpiece in cold water for about 15 seconds. This will set the mold of the player's teeth and should make it ready for use in a game or practice. Rinse the mouthpiece off, then have the player wear it for comfort.
Step 5
Check the fit of the mouthpiece. If the player sat still for the 15 seconds while the mouthpiece was in his mouth, the fit should be perfect. However, if the player moved his teeth at all, the fit may not be perfect. If the mouthpiece does not feel like it fits correctly, repeat the process over until the fit is right.
