Although electric shavers are safe and simple to use, and are generally faster than shaving with a blade, the first few times can net less-than-perfect results. If you've never used an electric razor, give your skin and hair at least three weeks to grow accustomed to the shaver, advises HairFacts.com.

Soften Your Skin

Soften your skin and hair with warm water before you begin to shave. Wash your face with soap and a washcloth, or shave immediately after a warm bath or shower. Always pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing, which may irritate the skin.

Use a Pre-Shave Product

Splash on a gel or liquid alcohol-based pre-shave product, then allow the product to penetrate your skin for two to three minutes before shaving. The pre-shave product will make shaving easier by making the hair stand up and away from your skin.

Shave in the Direction of Hair Growth

Rub your fingers gently over the area to be shaved to determine which way the hair grows. The direction of hair growth can vary, even within a small area of skin. Shave against the direction of hair growth for a close shave, while holding the skin taut with one hand. Shave in only one or two passes, as excessive shaving will only irritate your skin. Avoid pressing hard, as moderate, even pressure is all that is required. Shave using small circular motions If you use a rotary electric shaver.

Use a Moisturizer

Shaving can irritate the skin, causing it to appear dry and flaky. Apply a moisturizer to the area immediately after shaving to keep your skin nourished and hydrated. Avoid aftershave products containing fragrance, dyes or alcohol.
