In today's on-the-go society, many people have trouble avoiding fast food for some of their meals. Many restaurants cater to people who are more health-conscious, offering low-calorie food options on menus. Choose low-calorie fast food options to avoid packing on the pounds.
Breakfast
When ordering breakfast at a fast-food restaurant, go with English muffins over biscuits. If there is an option to choose egg whites over whole eggs, that will lower the calorie count, too. Leaner meats, such as turkey or Canadian bacon, are preferable over sausage, and the addition of cheese always adds calories. A standard breakfast sandwich of an English muffin, egg, cheese and Canadian bacon will have less than 300 calories, whereas a egg and sausage biscuit can have upwards of 500 calories.
Lunch/Dinner
Cheeseburgers and hamburgers are standard fare, and choosing wisely can lower your calorie intake. A cheeseburger with two patties has over 450 calories, and then when you add condiments such as ketchup and mayonnaise you can come close to 600 calories -- and that is just if you stop at one sandwich. A single-patty burger with vegetables and condiments in moderation will be less than 300 calories, making it a much lower calorie option.
Sides
While salads may seem like a low-calorie choice, they can have just as many calories as a sandwich meal due to the cheese, dressings and extras. Plainer salads with light or no dressing will only be about 100 to 150 calories, as opposed to 500 or 600 calories for packed salads. Fruit cups and mashed potatoes are also lower-calorie alternatives to French fries, both coming in at less than 100 calories per serving.
Drinks
While it may be easy to order a soft drink with your meal, this can put on just as many calories as a hamburger. Opting for a diet soft drink or water, will still quench your thirst while adding zero calories.
