When your skin produces too much oil, or sebum, it can combine with dead skin cells and cosmetics or moisturizers to clog your pores. According to Medical News Today, blackheads are also called open comedones and are the first stage of acne. The second stage occurs when bacteria irritate and infect the clogged pores, leading to pimples. Proper skin cleansing is important to keep pore-clogging dirt from being attracted to the oil on your face.

Step 1

Wash your face with a gentle facial soap to remove makeup and dirt.

Step 2

Heat a pot of water on the stove until it boils. Turn off the heat and set the pot on a folded towel or hot pad on your counter or table.

Step 3

Drape a towel across your shoulders and pull it over your head. Lean over the pot of water for 10 minutes, allowing the steam to open your pores.

Step 4

Pat your skin dry and pick up your clean blackhead removal tool. If you are unsure whether or not it is clean, wash it for three minutes with warm water and antibacterial soap.

Step 5

Place the cone end of the blackhead removal tool flat against your skin so the hole is over the clogged pore. Press gently to squeeze the blackhead from your skin. Blackheads should be soft and easy to remove.

Step 6

Moisten a cotton ball with salicylic acid toner and wipe it over your face to remove any excess oil from your pores and help prevent new blackheads from forming.
