Massage is a popular form of therapy that promotes relaxation, improved health, stress-relief and athletic performance. Massage is the manipulation of superficial muscle layers, increasing blood circulation to muscle groups and providing nerve stimulation. Swedish and shiatsu are two of nearly eighty recognized massage modalities. Understanding both massage processes can help you determine which form is best for you.
Swedish Massage
Originally a European method, Swedish massage incorporates five different stroke patterns across major and minor muscle groups. The five stroke patterns are effleurage (sliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (tapping in rhythm), vibration and friction. Ranging from light to firm pressure depending on your preference, this type of massage is used to release muscle tension and increase blood circulation throughout the body and as rehabilitation for medical or athletic injuries.
Shiatsu
Shiatsu originated in Japan and means "finger pressure" in literal translation. Shiatsu is used to correct energy imbalances in the body. It involves applying pressure to "energy meridians." Energy meridians are internal networks that channel energy throughout the body. Sickness and disease are said to be caused by obstruction in these channels, explains BreakwaterStudio.com. Using pressure and other manipulations, including vibration, rolling and brushing, at focal points for two to eight seconds each is said to regulate the energy channels and bring balance and stability to the patient's body.
Differences in Philosophy
The governing philosophies in Shiatsu are based on Oriental beliefs and theories, such as those of inner qi (energy) and balance and their regulation in the body to promote optimal health. Swedish massage is based on the concepts of western science. If you are not familiar or comfortable with the more abstract concepts of Shiatsu, you might want to consider other massage methods like Swedish massage. If your views on stress management and health are based on a holistic approach, Shiatsu might be a good option for you.
Difference in Execution
Swedish massage typically focuses on the superficial muscle layers, and therefore is lighter in pressure. Directed pressure is used in Shiatsu, so in choosing between these two styles, you might need to consider what level of intensity you prefer. Another major difference between Swedish massage and Shiatsu is that Swedish massage clients are typically partially or completely unclothed, while certain areas of the body may be covered in towels for privacy purposes. Shiatsu patients are usually fully clothed. In either case, you can usually inform your therapist of your preference during or before your session.
Considerations
If performed properly, massage therapy has very few associated health risks. However, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that several cautionary measures should be taken before you decide to get massage treatment. You should not get deep-tissue or vigorous massage treatment if you have low blood platelet counts or bleeding disorders. Cancer patients should consult their oncologist before getting a massage; direct pressure on the area of a tumor is usually not advised. Women who are pregnant should also consult their doctor before receiving a massage.
