Large pores are caused by several factors. If your parents had oily skin, chances are that you will, too. Oily skin tends to have larger, more noticeable pores and spending time in the sun can cause your skin to thicken, exaggerating their size. Poor skin care and lack of exfoliation can lead to excessive surface oils and blackheads that can emphasize the size and appearance of pores. Reduce the size of the pores on your face through proper skin care and supplemental treatments.

Step 1

Establish a daily cleansing routine. Wash your face both morning and evening with a face wash for oily skin. Never go to bed with makeup on.

Step 2

Tone your skin with an astringent toner after cleansing. Toners penetrate the pores and remove excess oils and dead skin cells that your face wash leaves behind. Choose a toner that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. It works as an agent to promote skin exfoliation.

Step 3

Moisturize your skin with an oil-free moisturizer labeled as noncomedogenic and designed for use on oily skin. Using a moisturizer after cleansing and toning helps replace some of the moisture removed with cleansing. Without moisturizers, your skin can work overtime producing oils, possibly leading to clogged pores. Using a moisturizer that includes sunscreen can help protect your skin from sun damage that can also lead to enlarged pores.

Step 4

Exfoliate your skin at least once a week with an over-the-counter product. Use a facial scrub that contains aluminum oxide crystals, the same ingredient often used at spas by estheticians when receiving a microdermabrasion treatment. The first few times you use an exfoliator, do not press too hard on your skin and carefully follow the directions of the manufacturer. Exfoliating sloughs off the top layer of skin, exposing new skin and reduces pore appearance.

Step 5

Try natural home remedies to help shrink your pores. One remedy for tightening pores requires combining 1 tbsp. of distilled witch hazel with 1 tbsp. of Fuller's earth to create a paste. Add one whipped egg white and briskly mix all ingredients together. Apply to a clean face for 30 minutes then rinse with warm water and pat dry. Another remedy to shrink pores requires whipping together 4 tbsp. distilled witch hazel, 2 tsp. lemon juice, 2 drops of tea tree oil and one drop of peppermint oil. Place the mixed ingredients in the refrigerator for five minutes and use a cotton ball to apply to clean skin before bedtime.

Step 6

Visit a spa or dermatologist for a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. Chemical peels reduce the appearance and size of large pores using trichloroacetic acid, deeply penetrating and removing damaged skin while promoting new cell growth. Laser resurfacing treats large pores, wrinkles, sun damage and acne scars and boosts the production of collagen and elastins in the skin.
