Stitches, also called sutures, are commonly used to close the skin after a serious wound or to close surgical incisions. Proper care of the wound is essential to prevent infections and minimize scars. However, wounds that require stitches often will leave at least a minor scar. Additionally, some people are genetically predisposed to scarring. In most cases, though, the scar will gradually fade and become less noticeable over time, according to MedlinePlus.
Step 1
Wash the skin where the stitches are twice a day with soap and warm water, Cleveland Clinic advises. If the stitches are closing a surgical incision, wait at least 24 hours before washing them for the first time.
Step 2
Dry the wound thoroughly with a clean towel after each washing. Because the skin will likely be sore, pat the skin with the towel.
Step 3
Apply antibiotic ointment to the wound to help prevent infection.
Step 4
Cover the wound with a clean bandage or dressing. The bandage should be changed each time you wash the wound and whenever it gets dirty or wet, MayoClinic.com advises.
Step 5
Watch for signs of infection, which include fever, pain, redness, inflammation and draining from the wound, according to MedlinePlus. Infections can be serious and may increase healing time, which increases the likelihood of developing a scar.
Step 6
Follow your doctor's directions with regard to having the stitches removed. Stitches that are left in longer than necessary can cause scarring, Cleveland Clinic warns. Contact your doctor promptly if your stitches fall out before they are scheduled to be removed.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have a cut that you think may require stitches, prompt treatment can help prevent scarring. Try to have the wound tended to within 8 hours, the University of Texas Medical Branch advises. If your cut has been glued with medical adhesive, do not use antibiotic ointments on the wound. Ask your doctor if you should continue to use antibiotic ointments or creams after the stitches are removed or whether any other topical products may help minimize scarring.
