How to Get Curly Hair Wavy

Curly hair can be hard to control. It often takes on a life of its own, and many women feel that they either have to let it go natural or blow dry and flat iron it into submission. There is a third option; you can wear your curly hair wavy. Wavy hair creates a casual look that many people find appealing. It doesn't take as long to create a wavy look as it does a straight one, and a wavy look often retains its shape better than sleek looks.

Step 1

Start with clean, dry hair. Wash your hair the night before and let it air dry or wash it before styling and completely blow dry it before you begin.

Step 2

Set with large hot rollers. Divide your hair into large sections. Depending on how thick your hair is, you may have six to ten sections. Roll each section on hot rollers, directing the curls away from your face.

Step 3

Spritz lightly with hairspray, using a light touch.

Step 4

Remove rollers when cool. Be gentle: the more you handle your hair, the greater the odds of developing frizz.

Step 5

Tug gently on the end of each section, stretching out some of the curl.

Step 6

Rub a small amount of hair pomade between your palms and then apply to the ends of your hair. This creates a little definition and keeps the waves separated.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some people find hair easier to style if it has some buildup on it, but the drawbacks---greasy looking hair near the scalp and limp ends---are not worth the advantages. Once you remove the rollers, only finger style your hair. A comb or brush will pull out the waves, leaving you with frizz.

Things You'll Need

  • Hot rollers
  • Hair spray
  • Styling pomade
