A utility knife is the typical tool used to remove a golf grip from a golf club. Unfortunately, this tool destroys the grip while removing it. Another tool, however, allows you to remove a grip undamaged. Called a spring rod grip removal tool, this device consists of a large plastic handle and two rod-shaped blades made of smooth spring steel. When inserted into a golf grip, it provides a channel for solvent to travel between the grip and the club shaft, loosening the bond between the grip and the grip tape, allowing you to remove the grip without damaging it.

Step 1

Put on the rubber gloves. Coat the two spring-rod blades on the spring-rod grip remover tool with golf club grip solvent.

Step 2

Insert the tips of the spring rods on the tool between the golf club shaft and the mouth of the club grip. Squirt some solvent into the gap in the mouth of the grip created by the tool.

Step 3

Continue to insert the spring rods into the grip gently but firmly so the blades spiral down the shaft. Squirt more solvent into the grip periodically. Continue inserting the tool until the tips of the spring rods reach the butt end of the grip.

Step 4

Work the spring-rod grip tool around the shaft to allow the solvent to break the seal between the grip and the grip tape on the shaft.

Step 5

Twist the grip as it loosens from the tape. Once the grip is completely free from the grip tape, pull the grip off the golf club shaft.

Step 6

Insert the grip bore cleaner into the freed golf grip and twist it several times to remove any tape or adhesive residue within the grip. Remove any remaining solvent from the grip.
