The closest bay fishing to Panama City is at St. Andrews State Park Aquatic Preserve, home to St. Andrews Bay. The bay is one of Florida's most diverse ecosystems and is mostly fed by other saltwater sources rather than freshwater streams. Guided tours led by experienced anglers who can assist in fly fishing, trolling and bottom fishing are available.

The Bay

St. Andrews Bay is a prime spot for spawning fish --- it has the largest area of seagrass in the Florida panhandle. St. Andrews Bay is home to many species of fish and shellfish living in the diverse habitats of the Aquatic Preserve. Many endangered species are in this ecosystem, so when fishing it is important to pay attention to the fishing rules and regulations.

What You'll Catch

St. Andrews Bay offers a variety of fish to catch. Sport fish here include redfish, sea trout, Spanish mackerel, flounder, tarpon and pompano. Shark fishing is also popular in St. Andrews Bay --- recently there has been a limit of two sharks per boat, and as a result, the shark population is growing. Bottom fishing is also popular in the bay, where anglers will catch red snappers and amberjack. One of the best places to fish on St. Andrews Bay is around the jetty, where many species of fish gather.

What to Bring

Because of the diversity of the habitat, several fishing opportunities are available at St. Andrews Bay, including fly fishing, trolling, free lining and bottom fishing. If you are fishing alone rather than going on a guided tour, you'll need the appropriate rod and tackle, depending on what you're looking to catch. Larger sport fish and sharks demand sturdier line and heavy tackle. The bay is a great place for people who get sea sick because of the still waters. Don't forget sunscreen and water as it can get hot out on a boat.

Guided Trips

Taking a fishing trip on the bay with an experienced guide is the best way to guarantee that you'll catch fish. Even experienced anglers will find that fishing with someone who knows the St. Andrews Bay will give them a better opportunity to catch a fish --- especially larger sport fish such as shark, tarpon and redfish. Guided trips will often provide you with the fishing gear you need; you should remember sunglasses, sunscreen, a snack and water.

Florida Fishing License

Before you take a fishing trip in Panama City, obtain a Florida Recreational Saltwater Fishing License. On some days during the summer anyone can saltwater fish. These days vary from year to year, so check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. Anyone younger than 16 does not need a permit and depending on what you are fishing for, there may be specific rules and regulations. License types vary according to residency and time span.
